When Clay dries it normally cracks, this image is representative for drought and everything that is associated with it. The once smooth, uniform surface of wet clay is separated into different fragments with the evaporation of water. Fragmented Earth tries to show the ambivalent beauty of this process, by highlighting one fragment with a material that we as humans consider to be of utmost value. In this way it also attempts to lift the importance of “dirt”, the top layer of our planet that sustains nearly all life outside of the water. This dirt is much more valuable than all the gold in the world. In addition to this the piece also raises questions of the fragmentation of the earth into different “states” and territories and the absurdity to gild a specific one.
